Sometimes a mom can make a mistake.

You think you have read enough and made sure you know the MPAA rating of a movie.   I did that for "The Dark Knight."

I knew it was PG-13 and thought that my 11-year-old and his buddy could go to the midnight showing last Thursday. It would be a special event, plus they are crazy about Batman.

There are those who feel critics should not go into movies with pre-judgments or anything else in their heads.

I hate to break it to you folks but that does not happen. Even Roger Ebert admits he has expectations prior to seeing a movie and that his life experiences form his opinions as he watches a movie.

MPAA Rating  -  G        Warning Flags  -  Heart tugging moments of Depression era realities, may be too involved for younger viewers   Appropriate Viewing Age  - First Grade and up

"Kit Kittredge: An American Girl" is a throw back to a different time

It is a movie with a spunky heroine played by a spunky child actress who is an Oscar nominee.   Plus it is filled with actors and actresses who have worked on better and bigger projects.

Ever since 1996 when Will Smith starred in the blockbuster "Independence Day," Smith has been wowing the audience as an action hero.

Not having a chance to get in a good art house film in awhile, I decided a trip up to the Century Cinema at Clark and Diversey was needed.

My choice film this day was "War, Inc" starring John Cusack.

Here John Cusack is a hit man on the ethical edge.

MPAA Rating   - PG13   Warning Flags - Action Violence, Crude humor and language   Appropriate viewing age  - Pre-teen and up

"Get Smart" has such memories for someone who is around my age.   We remember the magic that was Don Adams and Barbara Feldon.

So the next, blazingly obvious question is can the new movie live up to the genius that was Adams, Buck Henry and Mel Brooks?

Whatever you might think about Jack Black, the guy must be given props for having talent and the chutzpah for using those talents.

On Saturday night, the husband and I went to see "Sex and the City."

The auditorium was half full. The mix of the audience was everything from college-aged students to seniors citizens who looked as if they were hitting 80. Not that I am saying there is anything wrong with octogenarians seeing this movie.

Quite frankly I learned a few things but more on that later.

After trying to only briefly look at or hear reviews for "Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," I knew the reviews for this movie were mixed. There are as many vehement haters as there are lovers.

So what are we critics looking for when we see a movie?

This past weekend I went to the theater as if I was a normal movie goer.

I had just worked  six days in a row in my other job and was looking to be entertained. I was exhausted and drained. I did not want to think about world peace, global warming or the Olympic torch protests.
