Soothsayer Says: Predictions for the 82nd Academy Awards

Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future.
Niels Bohr, Danish physicist (1885 - 1962)

Indeed, looking into the future is quite a task, a feat only luck can prove. And this year, the Oscars are no different.

The 82nd Academy Awards are this Sunday. Unlike in the past, this year's awards, at least in some categories, are (in)gloriously up in the air. It will be putting quite the hurt to lock in picks. An education, of sorts, could come up. There could be a precious blindside. I just won't be a serious man about changing my avatar.

Alright, alright--throw the rubber chicken at me, and I'll be done.

All kidding aside, going into Sunday night, several categories (notably one, in particular—read on) can have surprises and shocks… or just general wins from right-field.

I will examine the major categories, talk as much about each nominee as possible—their chances, what prevents them from the win. I may go off the rails, but that’s the fun of the awards train: buckle up…

I spoke with actor Edward James Olmos yesterday at Wizard World Chicago Comic-Con. Among discussing his past ("Blade Runner") and present ("Battlestar Galactica" and the upcoming TV film), he dropped he said of his future plans that he will be joining Michel Gondry's "The Green Hornet."

"I'm on my way to do 'The Green Hornet,'" Olmos told me. "It'll be a lot of fun with Seth [Rogen], Nicolas Cage and Cameron Diaz."

No mention on the size of the role or what character, but, nevertheless, this is a big story that will continue to develop, including my full interview with Mr. Olmos.

"The Green Hornet" will star Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz and Taiwanese actor Jay Chou, who was just announced as Stephen Chow's replacement as sidekick Kato. It is scheduled for release in 2010.

'Slumdog Millionaire' was the big film winner at the 66th annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night. The movie about a young Indian man competing on India's version of 'Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?' and his life's flashbacks about his hardships and lost love won Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Director for Danny Boyle, Best Screenplay and Best Original Score.

Before I get ding in, allow me to introduce myself, a new staff writer for Hollywood Snitch. My name is Matt Sheehan, a JJC "PhD." alumnus and former freelance critic of the Morris Daily Herald. I am pleased and happy to join Rilio in the site. Now, this Sunday, on NBC at 8p/7c, the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards returns, after last year's silly stupid yet unsurprising pseudo-news conference ceremony due to the writer's strike. And since the stars will be there, the booze will flow as much as the slurred speeches from stars' lips.
