4K Blu-ray Review: Richard Pryor: Here and Now

Synopsis: This high-voltage concert film shot in New Orleans, features the sensational Richard Pryor in his prime. Doing some of his most innovative material, Pryor takes charge on stage with an electrifying style and an unequaled comedic genius, in an incredibly funny performance guaranteed to rock you with side-splitting laughter!

Main Feature: There is no denying Richard Pryor's influence on comedy, specifically stand-up. No-filter, everything out, frank stories woven into laughter. Me being of a younger age than the generation of his, Pryor's stand-up was one I discovered late. His special Here and Now is actually one of the first I saw. I have a soft spot for it, and laugh plenty, despite it paling in comparison to Live on the Sunset Strip, for example. IT seems like an odd choice, too, for UHD. It's not ground-breaking, it doesn't explore anything dynamic that Pryor didn't do already, but it's still a maestro hitting classic, masterful notes in different tunes: the talent is still there. The 4K presentation leaves much to be desired, again an odd choice and not even well-done.

Final Call: Richard Pryor: Here and Now may be a retread of the same messaging the legendary comic covered before, the man's stature deserves more comprehensive care here, now or in the future.
