Blu-ray Review: The American Revolution: A Film by Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein & David Schmidt8/24/2026 Synopsis: Thirteen American colonies unite in rebellion, win an eight-year war to secure their independence, and establish a new form of government that would inspire democratic movements at home and around the globe. What begins as a political clash between colonists and the British government grows into a bloody struggle that will engage more than two dozen nations and forever change the world. Main Feature: When it comes to Ken Burns' documentaries, you know you will get a wealth of information and expert talking heads matched up with celebrity narration. For the most part, Burns is spot-on, and even in lesser subjects, its still intriguing and curious. The American Revolution is lacking that usual Burns gravitas despite the heavy hitters involved. Plus, while his documentary series are of great length, this one just seems long and plodding along. It is missing the exceptional pacing of The Civil War or the showmanship of Baseball. Perhaps he has set the bar so high for others that he now has trouble reaching his own plateau. Don't get me wrong--as a lover of US history, The American Revolution is still a watch for me. But as a Burns' fan, I need him to do more.
Bonus Features: Zero extras. Final Call: The American Revolution might've been televised but doesn't live up to it's subject matter. Grade: C-
