Synopsis: In the wake of inheriting his father's hotel chain, Hal tries to end his long and secret relationship with Rebecca, a dominatrix. A battle of wills ensues over the course of one fraught night, with Rebecca and Hal struggling to keep the upper hand.
Review: Margaret Qualley has a presence that instantly captures your attention. Her talented mother Andie MacDowell had the same ability. Now that we've established which side of the family she gets that from, Qualley deftly uses this 'it' factor in "Sanctuary." The role as a dominatrix literally orders you to look (or not) at her. This simple two-hander is an onion peeler that generates claustrophobia, power dynamics, and psychological thrills. "Sanctuary" ultimately submits to it's own tension and atmosphere, never fully latching in for a complete realized story. Thankfully, the Qualley cult knows she sells "Sanctuary."

Note: This film reviewed after CCFF 2023 wrapped, when available for rent/purchase.
