Chicago Critics Film Fest 2023 Review: Theater Camp

Synopsis: Eccentric staff members of an upstate New York theatre camp must band together when their beloved founder falls into a coma.

Review: I really didn't laugh much at "Theater Camp." Maybe I just don't get the joke. I admit, I am a novice when it comes to theatrical productions, from concept to live performance. I literally have been to one professional production (Spamalot), and it was a based choice (I love Monty Python). The experience is just not for me, so I feel the jokes the CCFF closing night audience were laughing at were almost inside jokes to the point I might as well stepped out of the theater to the same effect: I would've been missing the same stuff no matter what. That doesn't mean I don't recognize the passion the filmmakers and performers have for showcasing the art form, which is evident throughout. I wish the film wouldn't leave the uninitiated out of the round.
